Our Client

Our Client is the world's leading membership organization of health and fitness professionals, with more than 19,000 members in over 80 countries. Located in San Diego, California since 1982, they have provided health and fitness professionals with unbiased data, pertinent information, educational resources, career development and industry leadership. Their membership includes personal trainers, program and fitness directors, business owners and managers, and group fitness instructors.

COO position description and responsibilities

 

The COO will partner with and complement the CEO in developing company strategy and optimizing overall organizational effectiveness and processes. The COO will also provide leadership, ownership, and responsibility for operations in the three major business lines of the company.

This position will be the operational point person who ties the high level strategy to seamless tactical operations across all organizations. The COO will have all organizations reporting directly to him or her, and will be responsible for ensuring their progress against stated plans and goals. They will be expected to evaluate staff and make adjustments where needed to ensure that company goals are achieved.

The COO will provide leadership to the existing executive staff on all operational issues, while ensuring all organizations are aligned with strategic initiatives, and are delivering against established metrics. They will make certain that all efforts are focused consistently with the long-term product/service/company strategy. This person will assess the existing infrastructure, including policies, systems, procedures and controls, and conduct a thorough analysis of the organization, including an assessment of the depth of management talent.

The COO will drive the growth of the organization by enhancing and expanding existing product and service offerings, partnerships, and outreach efforts.  He or she will also lead the development and execution of new media and internet marketing programs that capitalize on the strong foundations and branding of existing business lines.

Required Skills and Knowledge

This person must be passionate about the corporate mission and inherently understand the value proposition. The COO needs to have the recognition and respect of our employees, derived from their track record in previous roles running successful organizations.

Senior management (VP/SVP) experience with a large blue-chip corporation is required. Ideally, our candidate will also have senior management experience in a small or emerging company. In these prior roles, the candidate will have established and maintained strong, positive experiences that can be leveraged for the company.

The candidate must also have expertise with small business / consumer-focused business models. They will have demonstrated an ability to understand the high level strategy of the company, and synchronize daily operational execution across all organizations of the company.

This role requires a candidate with a proven track record for delivering operational results through effective team building and leadership. The candidate will have managed multi-functional organizations and taken them to a higher level of performance. We will look for measurable improvements made in quality control and end-user satisfaction. This position requires the ability to keep an organization focused on long term service goals while adapting to the short-term trends and tides of a rapidly changing and evolving marketplace.

The COO will have preferably had experience working in the event planning, multimedia publishing, membership services, or health & fitness industries. This person will also have had experience in translating and leveraging traditional business lines and services into internet / web / new media platforms. They will have proven themselves to have strong financial management, people management skills and marketing saavy. The candidate will possess highly developed strategic planning, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. Experience bringing together and managing executive level teams is essential.

We expect the candidate to have a minimum of 15 years of applicable leadership, and an MBA or advanced degree. We expect that the candidate will exemplify our corporate values and mission.
